Root Canal Treatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the center of a tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is a soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, injury, or a cracked tooth, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated. Root Canal Treatment is often the best way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It helps eliminate infection, alleviate pain, and preserve the natural tooth.

Process of Root Canal Treatment

Diagnosis

The dentist takes X-rays to determine the extent of the infection and the shape of the root canals.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area.

Access Opening

An opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected pulp.

Cleaning and Shaping

The infected pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned and shaped.

Filling

The opening is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

Restoration

After a root canal, the tooth may need a crown or restoration to protect and restore its function.

FAQ

Your dental questions answered

The procedure itself is usually painless, as local anesthesia is used to numb the area.
A root canal typically takes one to two visits, depending on the complexity of the case. Each session can last about 60 to 90 minutes.
Mild discomfort or sensitivity may occur for a few days. It's important to follow post-treatment care instructions and avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it's fully restored.
In most cases, a crown is recommended after a root canal to protect the tooth and restore its function. The tooth can become brittle and more prone to fracture without it.
